Ever since it opened in October 2015, “Akihabara＠BEEP” has been one of the most unique used-PC shops in Akihabara. Their inventory consists mostly of retro PCs that can almost never be seen these days. Including “PC-6601SR(NEC)” and “X68000(SHARP)”, the shop carries PCs that are over 20 years old in good functioning condition.
Although it started out as an online shop, the customers continually requested the shop to have an actual store. As a result, they decided to open the shop in Akiba.
The manager told us: “when looking for a place to open our shop, we couldn't pick anywhere other than Akiba, where people knew about the charms of our merchandise.”
An unmistakably Akiba-style display. The items have incredibly detailed descriptions and comments that even amaze PC enthusiasts.
Just by looking at the game or video demo footage on the device is enough to let you know if the device is in good functioning shape.
The shop also sells a wide variety of retro gaming softwares as well as consoles such as Family Computer and Mega Drive. There is also a corner in the shop where you can find items originally not-for-sale, developer’s supplies, merchandise that feature the signature of the original character designer, and so on.
Besides arcade gaming PC boards, the store also sells the arcade gaming machine itself, something every gamer at some point wanted to have. You can set up your own gaming arcade at home.
The shop also handles gaming-related goods, such as retro game posters and magazines which had been originally handed out exclusively to fan club members, and more things that will astound any gaming enthusiast.
“BEEP＠Akihabara” is also popular among international customers; while people from Asia mostly come to buy MSXs, Europeans buy PC boards. The manager told us, “although Japan's games are well known around the world, there is no way for some people in other countries to actually try them out. That’s why I see a lot of them come to our store and stand in awe in front of the machines they used to dream of.” As much as the shop handles used items, there is no guarantee of its stock. The PC shop indeed handles once-in-a-lifetime deals.
