Mandarake Complex is a subculture superstore that deals in a variety of Japanese niche merchandise new and old. Though there are many stores in Akiba that deal in secondhand Japanese subculture merchandise, what sets this store apart is that the staff will buy or sell any merchandise they can find value in, new or used, even items without an established market price.
The manager says: “If our expert staff members like a product and it looks attractive in our storefront, we will purchase and sell it even if it’s a more obscure item. That’s the great thing about Mandarake.”
Because of that, there is a chance to get your hands on vintage merchandise you won’t find at other secondhand merchandise shops.
Their tremendous range of products includes comics, light novels, zines, anime and video games—both official publications and doujin (fan) works.
Many items here are normally only available to production staff members, such as anime scripts and animation cels—including a collection of autograph boards signed by voice actors. These are a must-see for anime and tokusatsu fans!
With retro Bikkuriman stickers, character-shaped erasers, and even Japanese corporate mascots like Peko-chan, this is the place to find toys coveted by Japanese girls and boys long ago.
On the cosplay floor, you’ll find costumes (of course) and a plethora of accessories and extras essential for getting into character.
With two English-speaking employees on staff, foreign visitors are well-attended to by store associates. Customers from overseas, too, can comfortably experience Japanese subculture.
That being said, couples and visitors with children should be wary of the “For Men” area located on the 4th floor, which carries adult products.
