Gansen Chinese Restaurant: The Taste That’s Been Loved in Akihabara for 20 Years

Here’s a restaurant so popular that everyone who frequents the Akihabara area knows about it. If you ask them about the secret to their popularity, the boss will say in one line, “Because it’s delicious!” The confidence in his cuisine is backed by his meticulous care for each customer. Whether they’re from here or overseas he’s known to carefully adjust the flavors to match his guests’ tastes.

Just by looking, you’ll see that even the tables are set spaciously apart. It’s as if the boss is saying “Go ahead and take it easy.”

Every dish comes in a satisfying portion! Even the locals to Akihabara are pleased with the large portions. There menu doesn’t have any English translations, but it’s full of pictures so that it’s easy to follow.

The food is cooked by the Jr. Boss, his son. He’s made sure that the original flavors and styles have carried through.
This time I had the son’s recommendation, “Paiko Rice (¥900, tax included)”, which was shown in one of the photos on the menu!

The Paiko Rice is made with a single roast beef cutlet and laid on a bed of rice. Then an vegetable-loaded “ankake” thick and starchy sauce is spooned over that.

The Paiko rice has a bit of a kick to it, which balances really well with the thick sauce. The entire dish has a lot of deep, heavy flavors but the egg-drop soup that comes with it is a great way to give your tongue a break so that you keep coming back for more.

Another popular dish is the “Beef Tendon Saucy Fried Rice”, available only on Saturdays.

For many years, you could always find lots of people inside this beloved Akihabara restaurant. The turnover is pretty quick so that even if it’s crowded you can get in without having to wait too long. They have everything from the standard Gansen Ramen to a la carte dishes, so that you can enjoy this restaurant on your own or with a group.
