Momi Momi, Momineko
Akihabara is full of maid cafes. Between 50 and 60 at the moment. But there are other establishments run by maids as well. Today, I want to show you one of those.
Welcome to the Momineko, which would roughly translate to the “Rubbing Cat”, a refresh club, of リフレ in Japanese for short. Other establishments have other options, what is available in a refresh club, but the basics are massages of various types and mimikaki, professional ear cleaning. We get to that later.
The Momineko is a really small, slightly hidden building, with rooms on 2 floors above the reception on the ground floor. There is also a toilet, which is a standard necessity, and a shower, which is not that common. The smaller room are about 2,2m long. I barely fit in, laying down flat, with my stuff in the corner and the simple, yet cozy, interior. Does it matter? Not really. The bigger rooms are slightly longer, which makes it easier for tall people like me, 1,9m or 6’3, but the cliental that comes the most offer are Japanese, so the size doesn’t really matter.
As you come in, you get to sit down and decide on the course you want to order. The cheapest one is 40minutes of finger pressure massae for 4000Yen plus 1000Yen for the maid of your liking. For the aroma oil therapy, it 12000yen for 90 minutes. Those are additional to the time you spend in the shower to get ready.
Your maid then takes you to the room and asks you to lay face down. She then puts a towel on you and starts the time. Unless you choose otherwise, the maid starts a light conversation with you, either about what you do and what you like or of course, if there are certain spots on your body that hurt or need extra attention or care.
You can ask for more or less pressure to your liking. Each maid has her own specialty and technique, which is a nice and does her best to take that stress off your shoulder. Literally. The massage usually, unless requested otherwise, starts with the shoulders and back, then goes down to the legs and feet and then a hand massage. The last few minutes, if there are some left over, at least the maid I choose the most often, the maid spends cleaning your ears. You rest your head on her lap, facing the away from her, and she gently proceeds to clean your ears with a Q-tip.
Other refresh clubs might use the tradition Japanese ear cleaning tools, but the Momineko uses the modern ones. Now you might think, that this is gross or weird or can’t possibly feel good. Japanese culture is a little different from western culture. Mimikaki is an action on bonding with family and close friends/lovers. Of course, there are people who don’t like it, even Japanese, but I can assure you, the gentleness with which they proceed to clean your ears will make you enjoy it. And you can bond with your favorite maid a little bit more, than you could otherwise. I highly recommend trying it at least once.
So, what’s with the aroma therapy? Well, it is, what is sounds like. It’s a massage with aroma oil instead of just the maids hands through your clothing and a towel. Before you get to be massaged though, you have to take a shower. Your clothes are kept in a basket and you get disposable underwear, shorts and for the ladies a paper bra.
There is a variety of oils for specific purposes. If you are not sure and can’t decide form the menu alone, the maids will help you choose the right one.
If you think, the time you ordered wasn’t sufficient, you can prolong the massage a bit at a time. Other options include a cheki, the mini polaroids, with your maid, taking a shower if you don’t order the aroma therapy and a hand massage during the aroma therapy. The menu is available in English as well, so no need to fret. They will take good care of you.
All in all, the Momineko is a very simple and basic maid refresh club. It’s very relaxing and enjoyable, with the maids specializing and providing excellent service in what they do rather than spreading out to a lot of things and being “just” good at it. So, if you don’t want anything fancy, the Momineko should be to place for you to go.
