“Schatz-kiste, ”a playground for Otaku, where classically dressed, elegant maids welcome you. A well-established maid café...

Schatz-kiste, which has celebrated its 10th anniversary this year(2016), is a well-established maid café spreading the Akiba culture. Fit to call itself a private library, its bookshelves are filled with books selected arbitrarily and with prejudice. It is a playground for those who pour their love into one particular thing (=Otaku), but not limited to just Anime or Manga.

The café is laid out in a way to facilitate exchange between customers, and between customers and maids. It has an English countryside theme with the warmth of wood. “ ‘Schatz-kiste’ means ‘treasure box’ in German, and we hope to offer ‘things that are exciting and thrilling’ to the customers who visit,” says the owner.

You can sense the high level of Otaku in the maids from their introductions and Schatz-kiste drawn by them. “Since I have been Otaku ever since I can remember, I started this place in hopes of creating a place where Otaku can freely speak with each other without concealing that they are Otaku,” says the owner.

A wide selection of special interest magazines (Dojinshi) that you will not find at regular bookstores. Special interest magazines (Dojinshi) serve as a way to present exhaustive research on Otaku’s beloved themes, and Schatz-kiste hosts opportunities to present them as a ‘club activity’.

Going between 2- and 3-dimensional world is another characteristic of Schatz-kiste. “Fuwa Fuwa no Kumasan” is a character in a Dojinshi. It travels the world with a stuffed animal, and it was visiting Schatz-kiste at this time.

This “Welcome to Schatz-kiste!” is a 4-square comic strip about maids’ daily happenings, depicted by the maids themselves. It is packed with maids’ love for Otaku and secret tales to further enjoy the café, such as behind-the-scenes stories about Schatz-kiste and maids’ outfits.

Schatz-kiste has been featured on BBC, a British TV station, and welcomes many foreign visitors. “We see a variety of people. There was a customer from France who said, ‘I chose this café as the starting point to travel the world.’ Otaku spirit is universal. Please come visit.” Owner’s interest began with the special filming of Claymation, which developed into magic and law enforcement. Please enjoy conversations about themes that may be difficult for others to accept at Schatz-kiste.
