In Akiba terms, the space between the skirt and the end of the knee-high socks is called zettai ryouiki, which translates literally as "absolute domain."
Named after this bit of Akiba slang, Zettai Ryouiki opened February 8th, 2014 ("knee-high day") as the world’s first knee-high socks store. Besides black and white, the store’s knee-high socks come in a wide variety such as border pattern (popular in anime), garter links, leg garter, panier and more. Complete with even the most specific knee-high socks, the store will help you find the right socks to show off your “absolute domain.”
The store carries a wide variety of socks, ranging from delicious-looking punk-style socks to ones with psychedelic patterns.
“Originally the store was meant to target Akiba, the maid cafe mecha,” says a store clerk, who adds, “but now it has become a popular store among female customers from all over Japan who like knee-high socks.” Even during our interview, there was a customer in the store who had come all the way from Hokkaido.
Besides ones that are sold in the market, the store also carries original design socks, which are displayed on the store walls.
“Many foreign customers purchase knee high socks for cosplay or Halloween. Either way, they love the flashy designs.”
There’s a rich collection of airy and colorful panier, too.
The package may seem like a CD or DVD case, but inside there’s a folded pair of knee-high socks.
The store also carries a rich collection of knee-high socks accessories like bands that hold the socks in place, from plain ones to cute ones with dangling character accessories.
