The maids you catch sight of around downtown are an icon of Akihabara culture. Nowadays, every store has its own collection of various distinct maid costumes, but back when maid cafés first appeared, even the maids were at a loss for what to do about such problems as the small number of varieties and low quality of maid costumes. Soon after, Candy Fruit was launched as a brand dealing in original, custom-made maid costumes.
The 1st floor houses sister store Candy Fruit Optical, a glasses store stocked with glasses chosen by maids. Candy Fruit itself is found on the 3rd floor.
Candy Fruit carries a full lineup of items essential to maid fashion, from dresses and lingerie designed for maids to accessories and shoes.
This is another popular style. As with the Belle-feuille in the previous picture, complementing this costume with items like aprons and lingerie completes the maid look.
Every day, Candy Fruit features a one-day-only sale with a coordinated package of maid uniform items. When we visited, it was a four-piece package that included a maid costume, apron, bow, and headband offered for 30% off the total price. The contents of the package change each day.
More than anything else, this shop’s distinguishing feature is that you can have them make you a custom maid uniform. It is possible to order one of the existing maid uniform designs in a different color or to create a completely original design. Price estimates vary based on elements like the design and the type of fabric, meaning it is necessary to discuss your order with the staff. For custom orders, the actual wearer of the maid costume must visit the store once to have measurements taken. Depending on the country, it is even possible to have custom orders shipped overseas once finished, so if you are a foreign visitor, please inquire about this at the store.
A headband is one accessory a maid cannot go without. There are standard headbands like the one Hiyori is wearing, as well as other varieties, like ones with cat ears attached.
The shop also stocks bracelets, earrings, and choker necklaces, as well as lots of accessories handmade by the staff. Apparently it is quite common for men to buy these items as presents for women.
Originally, Candy Fruit only sold custom-ordered products, but they opened their shop to cater to the demand for products without a wait and for customers who prefer to try on their costumes before purchasing. These maid uniforms are handcrafted one at a time and produced with a special emphasis on quality. One can be yours for ¥20,000 to ¥40,000. Candy Fruit is also responsible for production among popular maid cafés, and their quality is guaranteed.
