Super Potato Akihabara Retro Kan is a long-standing retro game shop that is extremely famous both in Japan and abroad for its extensive selection of classic games, including titles for the Famicom (NES outside of Japan) and Super Famicom (SNES). On floors three and four you can browse their retro game selection and similar items, and from there on the 5th floor you can find the shop’s specialty retro arcade, which is a lounge area filled with rows of playable arcade machines. This popular arcade was featured by the American site Mashable on their “20 Coolest Arcades in the World” list. Super Potato is essential for retro gaming fans visiting Akihabara.
The third floor is primarily for the NES, but you can also find games for the SNES and PC Engine, as well as the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast.
The 4th floor features games that are relatively new, which includes titles for the Playstation, PS2, Nintendo 64, Game Boy and other consoles. It’s always quite a thrill when you spot one of your favorite games after rummaging through the shelves.
You can also find packaging on the shelves for non-Japanese games. When I was there they had a selection that included titles for the Xbox, Game Boy Advance, and Mega Drive (or Genesis in America). (Be aware that the merchandise here tends to move around a lot.)
The 5th floor features their one of a kind retro arcade! It houses around 25 arcade cabinets with legendary titles that hardcore arcade fans love, such as Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Pac-Land, and Dynamite Deka (Die Hard Arcade). Each game will cost you 100 yen or more to play. There is also a change converter on the 5th floor in case you don’t have enough coins. The arcade is at its busiest starting in the afternoon up until the evening, so I would avoid that time of day if you are looking for a more relaxed arcade experience.
There is also another section on the same floor with old-school Japanese candy for sale. They make great souvenirs considering how rare these candies are outside of Japan. One of the employees told me that their selection of gummi candy is especially popular with customers. It’s also ok to eat and smoke in this section if you like.
This is the perfect place to be if you’re a gamer looking to get lost in video games for an entire day. It’s not just about browsing through the aisles of retro games either, since you can also let the time fly at the retro arcade while snacking on Japanese candy. Super Potato offers the kind of experience that you can’t find anywhere else but Akihabara.
