@home cafe: Akiba's Original Maid Café

Maid café culture is a key part of modern Akihabara. “@home cafe,” with this year marking their 11th, is said to be the maid café that created the culture. Amongst a line-up of various maid cafés in Akihabara, @home cafe is an entertainment-oriented maid café that is super popular with visitors from abroad looking to “enjoy a fun, lively time with the maids.”

Another attractive point of the café is that the wait times are short even when the place is really busy, as the café occupies a number of floors in one building.

Opened in August 2015, the café on the 5th floor displays a flamboyantly pink motif.

The president of @home cafe, hitomi, also doubles as one of the café’s maids. “To give our patrons from abroad better service, as part of their initial training, new maids improve their English ability by inviting English teachers to our café,” hitomi explains. Such spirit of hospitality can only be found at an established maid café like this one. She adds, “Even though it may come out clumsily, the maids here try their best when communicating in English. And if that is one way our customers enjoy mingling with them, then I would be overjoyed.”

This is hitomi’s adorable performance. “When we serve dishes to customers, we ask them to join us in our performances. Though there are some who at first feel a little shy about participating, since their intention here is to have fun with us, those feelings quickly fade away as they have the time of their life. That is the key to having a great time here,” says hitomi.

“Furi-furi, shaka-shaka ♪ Mixed juuchu (750 yen, tax excluded).” Customers cannot wait to see what color the drink will turn out to be!

“Pipiyo-pipiyo ♪ Hyoko-san rice (1,100 yen, tax excluded).” The maids perform ketchup art right in front of the patrons!

The 2nd floor of the building is the “@home shop,” where you will find tons of goods of the café’s maids.

This original product called “Maccha-yaki chocolate (1,000 yen, tax included)” is frequently bought as a souvenir.

You can also purchase this “@home cafe original maid costume (39,900 yen, tax included)!”
