Akihabara is filled with hobby shops, but the pioneer is Kaiyodo Hobby Lobby Tokyo, which sponsors the twice-yearly Wonder Festival figurine convention. At Kaiyodo Hobby Lobby, you can get a direct look at the high-quality products created by Kaiyodo themselves.
Kaiyodo creates the high-quality Capsule Q series of capsule machines, which include souvenirs from art museums and aquariums.
Kaiyodo are experts in creating realistic-looking plants and animals. Despite being so small, they're incredibly precise and very popular as souvenirs.
These soft plastic dolls are another Kaiyodo specialty. Popular with children more than 30 years ago, there are few experts left who can create such high-quality versions.
These Buddhist statues-turned-action figures, the Revoltech Takeya series, are extremely high quality.
This Kaiyodo series, called Assemble Borg, are totally customizable thanks their 5mm connecting joints. Customers can combine and recombine parts in different ways and create their own original works.
"To make Assemble Borg, we brought together manga artist Yasuhiro Nightow (Trigun) and desinger Noriyuki Jinguji (Hellsing Ultimate) to create a line of action figures for adults," says the Kaiyodo Hobby Lobby manager.
Because members of Kaiyodo are on staff at the store, you can speak to them directly about the design process of the action figures.
