“Kotobukiya Akihabara Store” is operated directly by the well-established figurine and plastic model manufacturer “Kotobukiya”. The best thing about this store is that because it’s operated by the manufacturer, you can check out the latest products before they reach other stores.
With everything from cute characters through to Star Wars, Studio Ghibli, and the Godzilla series, the wide range of series represented here makes this a wonderland for figurine enthusiasts.
The first floor features a wide array of characters which are popular outside of Japan too, including Pokemon, Mario, Kirby and Nintendo characters.
The Studio Ghibli area is located on the second floor. Products produced in collaboration with the movies, such as anime and games, are divided across different areas and floors, so you can find what you’re looking for straight away.
“Netsuke” miniature carvings that combine Edo period culture with Ultraman monsters. The perfect decoration for your smartphone or wallet strap.
* “Netsuke” is a type of stopper which was used when hanging objects such as medicine cases and tobacco pouches from belts during the Edo period.
The third floor houses made-to-order miniature folding screens. They are carefully produced one-by-one by artisans who also work on full-size folding screens of the type found in traditional Japanese houses and rooms. Of course, you can even commission a full-size folding screen if you wish!
The Star Wars area takes up half of the fourth floor. According to one member of the shop’s staff, “They are more or less all products that are only sold in Japan, so they’re popular among non-Japanese fans too.”
Something you’ll definitely only find in Japan - light saber chopsticks! Turn the light on and off at your will.
Two hundred stormtroopers in one room - a true masterpiece! THIS is what collecting figurines is all about!
The way in which the characters’ view on the world is recreated here is also rather special. Apparently, a lot of people come here looking for limited edition products which sell out immediately, thinking “maybe they still have it there?”. This is the place to come in Akihabara to get your hands on a real treasure.
The stores also has English-speaking staff, so you can ask about how to use the figures, etc.
